Weekend Update for May 20 – 22

Has anyone else been as joyous as I have been to see the sun yesterday and today? This weekend is a busy one as the seasons transition between spring and summer (though with all of this rain, it might be hard to tell).

So, pull out your calendars and schedules and be sure to check out a few of this weekends events that supports our local and vibrant food system.

Farmers’ Markets are ongoing and starting up — if you are in the Greeley area the Greeley Farmers Market at the Depot starts Saturday at 7:30am and goes until 12:00 noon.

Saturday, May 21st –

Happy Heart is having their Open House on Saturday at 11:00am to 1:00pm for new and returning members as well as those who are curious about Community Supported Agriculture (Shares are still available!). You can find them at 2820 W Elizabeth Street in Fort Collins.

Planned activities include farm tours, kid art activities, minty drinks & spring greens, live music and more. Visit their website for more information!


The 20th Annual Erie Town Fair and Balloon Festival is this Weekend from 10:00am to 9:00pm. The Historic Downtown will host more than 200 venders, music, carnival games and a car show in addition to balloon launchings.

Hot air balloons will launch at 6:15am each morning at the Colorado National Golf Club, 2700 Vista Parkway, Erie. visit the Town website for vender and scheduling information.


If you are curious about or interested in permaculture, Grant Farms CSA is hosting a class for folks over 10 years old that will interactively introduce you to what permaculture is and how it is used around the farm. (Classes for younger kiddos are available in June.)

The class fee, which includes a snack and some seeds for you to take home, is $15. You can reserve your spot by calling them at 970-568-7654 or visiting their website.


The Annual March Against Monsanto Denver takes place at the Colorado State Capitol (200 East Colfax Ave, Denver CO 80203). Free and open to the public, the event is scheduled to start at 10:30 and go until 3:30. Visit the website for more information, including a schedule of events.


 

Sunday May 22nd –

The Sustainable Living Association is hosting the 9th annual Tour de Coop from 8:30am-1:30pm “Rain or Shine”. Join them for a 6 to 8 mile bike ride from coop to coop as experienced backyard chicken owners share their knowledge and experience.

Cost is $25/adult, $15/child; includes lunch. Be sure to register soon as it’s limited to 50 people.


The Farmhouse at Jessup Farm is hosting a Chicken & Pickin’ concert and community night to kick off patio season. Located at 1957 Jessup Drive, the event runs from 4:00pm to 6:00pm and will be featuring Lunde Station and a $10 fried chicken dinner. Odell Brewing Co will be there as well.


Later in the week –

Odell Brewing (800 Lincoln St.) is hosting a fundraiser for The Growing Project’s new educational garden at Hope Farms on Tuesday, May 24th from 7:00 to 9:00pm.

There is a $10 cover that includes one beer ticket and additional tickets can be purchased for $3. Credit cards are accepted.

And if you have ever been curious about adding bugs to your diet, on May 25th, The Growing Project is hosting an Eating Bugs 101 class. More properly called entomophagy, the class is scheduled to run from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at TGP Garden at Hope Farms (located at 1601 Shields street). Information on edibility and preparation will be shared along with samples. Tickets are $12, and must be purchased ahead of time (here) or you can email them  info@thegrowingproject.org for other payment options.
